Drill Bits: The Ewing Oil Store, Now Open for Business

The Ewing Oil Company Store, a new online retailer, is selling “Dallas”-themed merchandise for fans who want to bring a little bit of Southfork glamour into their homes. The signature product: a J.R. Ewing decanter inspired by the one seen on the TNT series.

“I was watching the show and like any crazed fan, the minute I saw that decanter, I wanted one,” said Stephen W. Phillips, who owns and operates the store. Phillips hired a glassworks company to create the decanters, which hold 31 ounces and sell for $39.95 each. Each decanter features J.R.’s signature etched into the glass and comes with a Southfork-branded bottle stopper.

Phillips’ products are not licensed by Warner Bros., which produces “Dallas,” although he’s contacted the studio about making his products “official.” If another company comes out with commercial products that are similar to his, Phillips said he may be required to stop selling his versions.

Last year, a Texas liquor distributor said it’s planning to sell J.R. Ewing bourbon in bottles like the one seen on the show, but it hasn’t hit the market. “Maybe there’s room for their product and mine,” Phillips said.

The Ewing Oil store’s other barware products include a Southfork liquor tray, a Ewing family ice bucket and a Ewing Global stainless steel flask. Additionally, the store sells Ewing Oil hardhats; replicas of the license plates that appeared on the show, including J.R.’s “Ewing 3” plate; and t-shirts that pay homage to classic “Dallas” storylines (the Gold Canyon 340 oil strike, the battle over the Tundra Torque).

Phillips’ love for “Dallas” began when he watched the show as a child with his grandmother on Friday nights. His enthusiasm for the Ewings continued through college, when daily “Dallas” reruns were appointment television for Phillips and his fraternity brothers.

Over the years, Phillips and his friends have staged their own version of the Oil Baron’s Ball, and he once made a pilgrimage to Southfork, where Phillips made his best friend push him into the swimming pool.

Don’t the people who run the ranch frown upon that sort thing? “It’s definitely frowned upon, but at least I can say I did it,” he said.

Batten Down the Hatches

Watch out, Christopher Ewing. Hurricane Heather is about to touch down on Southfork — or at least that’s how onetime “90210” star AnnaLynne McCord describes Heather, the new ranch hand she’ll play on “Dallas” next season.

“She comes on strong like a tornado and hurricane all wrapped into one,” McCord tells the MediaMikes entertainment news site. “Her energy is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I think that that dynamic is something that Christopher really likes about her. He is in this family that lies to everyone all the time and he has this one ‘creature’ that comes in saying, ‘I am going to tell you so much of the truth; you won’t be able to handle it.’”

McCord, who TNT bills as a guest star, tells MediaMikes she’ll wrap up her stint on the show during the third season’s 10th episode.

    great article. These items are totally great. I own 3 decanters, the rock glasses, the tray, the ice bucket, the flask, the Ewing 3 license plate. I love them. These items are at a great price for great Masterpiece.

  3. I ordered some glassware items 3 weeks ago, I haven’t received them, nor any communication from the seller. I have tried several times to call with no avail. Additionally an eBay sale went awry recently as the buyer gave negative feedback with the statement that they didn’t receive their decanter as well.

    Just letting people know that I ordered a Decanter and Stock certificate back on February 10th and still have not recieved any of my paid for items. The owner stopped communicating with me after I asked for a refund a couple of weeks ago.

    I bought and paid for items and have not got anything from this Stephen W Phillips guy and he won’t answer emails and he got my money.

    • Dan – I paid Stephen W. Phillips through PayPal. I have a few response emails from this Phillips character that says the items will be shipped shortly, or delayed slightly, or going out when I get back to office. I checked on the order about 3 times since my order was placed on Feb. 10th. After nearly 3 months of not getting anything, and reading excuses…it got old. So as I said before, when I asked for a refund, he stopped responding to emails…not a good sign. Although I’m past 45 days for PayPal, they did say its possible to still get my money back…as they have an open investigation going on. They will explain what you need to do. So if you used Paypal and you have not received your items, I strongly encourage you to contact Paypal and file a complaint. Even if it’s after 45 days. I assume some people are getting their items???

      • I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing these problems. I can only share my experience, which was positive: My partner Andrew ordered some gifts for me from the Ewing Oil Company Store during the winter and the merchandise arrived promptly.

        Everyone, I have ordered a t shirt from the Ewing Oil Company Store back on March 27, 2014. Was told that they ran out of them, and will be sent later. Well today is May 18, 2014 and still haven’t recieved anything. I was friends with Stephen Phillips on facebook until today. He deleted me from there and blocked me from leaving comments and messages (communication to the company) on the Ewing Oil Company Store facebook as well. The only phone number they have for us to contact them has the voicemail filled up, can’t leave any message. I have ordered many product from here before, and have recieved all of it except my shirt. I recently ordered a buckle too. Hope that comes to me too.

Never again!!

    well here we go again!!! I ordered the BLACK JR EWING Tshirt from Ewing Oil Company Store back in June 2014…..Well let’s just say that I HAVE NOT received that item!!! I contacted them on Facebook and was told that they shipped it out!!! Well I contacted them again and let them know I HAVE NOT received it, they tried to tell me they did send it out, but they would send me a replacement since I HAVE NOT received it!!! Usually when a company sends out merchandise, they send an email showing a tracking number…I have not even gotten an email!!! I made a comment on a picture about me not getting my merchandise, and I was BLOCKED from leaving any message or comment on their facebook page….They don’t want the TRUTH to be known that they are crooks and take your money without giving your merchandise!!!! I am very close on hiring a lawyer and suing them for my money or my shirt!!!! So if you don’t want your money taken, don’t do any business with this company!!!! They don’t even have a contact number for customer service!!! When Stephen Phillips owned the company, things were great, now since the new owners have taken over, they post enough stuff on their facebook, but don’t send out the merchandise!!!!!! When Stephen Phillips sold the company, he should have shut it down, because the new owners are crooked and don’t live up to what they are supposed to do, and that is customer service!!!!!     I placed an order for a decanter in early July 2014. It is a gift for my son’s birthday in August. August, September and now October and no decanter. At first Stephen W. Phillips replied to my email telling me there was a glass delay and he would be sending the decanter in about a week with several gifts for my understanding. The next email I sent went unanswered for weeks until I received an email from new management telling me not to worry, my order is secure and after hiring new people, I would be getting my order That was about 3 weeks ago. I emailed again today and it came back saying the email address was no good. There is no other address available but the one To SW Phillips. I am glad to hear others have had problems but finally received their orders. I am still hopeful mine will come. Perhaps as Rob said, “Drill Bits” will help.

  8. This website selling the Ewing products online is a scam. They are currently being sued by Warner Bros. I made a purchase from them over a month ago and have never received the product. They took my money though! By searching on the internet, I am not the only person they have ripped off.

  9. I also placed two orders of glassware in early October. It is nearing the end of November and no products yet. I also received the email from S Phillips apologizing for the delay. Said there was a delay with the glass etching company in Italy. Said they were expecting new shipment in a couple days and I would receive my glassware along with a few small gifts from Ewing Oil. I have since tried to reach him from a different email and have gotten no response. I have been blocked from liking and comment on posts on the Ewing Oil Facebook page. I sent them a message and it was not read. I tried sending another message and I had been blocked (it said I do not have permission to chat with this user). Any info is appreciated on how to get reimbursed or get the product. Apparently I fell for a scam.

      • I just got an email yesterday from sWpOmnipedia saying the company is going through transition and they are trying to get the product officially licensed. They stated that the orders are secure and the items will be on their way. I had to send my last email to them from a different email address because the original email addy I sent messages from was not getting any replies.

    As you can see I paid for these in October and I still have not received them . I had 1 email that said it was being sent and they were sorry that it took so long.   12. very displeased with the product we received, was not what it said, returned for a full refund, which I know they received, still no refund nor have the contacted me after I have sent 3 emails, and oh btw the number they list just does a weird noise when you try to call!!!! I would not purchase anything from this store!!!!!!

  16. I too placed an order for the decanter set back in October as a gift for a family member. When I sent an email asking for status 2 wks later I received their very positive, it’s on back-order but because we value you, we will throw in addt’l Dallas merchandise. It has not been 3 months since the order was placed. They will not respond to emails. No monitored phone # can be found to contact them and based on all the other comments here, I’m guessing it’s pointless to continue trying. I am embarrassed to have made such a rookie mistake in ordering from a company without having done addt’l research on them and reading customer reviews.

    Well, I guess I just have to add my name to the long list of unsatisfied customers. I ordered a decanter and 4 glasses Dec 4, 2014 and I’ve not heard from them in spite of my sending emails to the address they give. I’m going to also go to their Facebook page and drop a series of comments about their slow shipping and complete lack of customer service. This company is a joke and they appear to be non-caring about their customers.

    • If you mention it on the facebook page you will immediately be blocked, that’s what has happened to all of us that tried the Facebook page route

      I just used the e-mail that was on my pay-pal and they answered 1 time and told me that the glass was coming from Italy and would be here within a week after that I did not get any answer from them

      • Add me to the list of people screwed by this company. I also pre-ordered the JR Ewing belt buckle (in July 2014) to be shipped in the fall. It’s now January, it has not arrived, no one responds to e-mails, their website and Facebook page are gone, and — even worse — since it’s been more than 45 days since the payment was made, PayPal *refuses* to assist or do anything about it. So, basically, I’m out over $70 for a belt buckle that is clearly never going to arrive. If you ever see the name “Stephen W. Phillips,” run in the other direction and don’t give them any money. And think twice about using PayPal — they are *utterly useless* if you have a problem!

      • One of the emails I received indicated that they are going through a business change of ownership and when I researched it some, I also got a couple indications that Stephen Phillips is no longer the owner. They also indicated that they are trying to get the product licensed and it is delaying all orders. I guess they want it all to be licensed before shipping any more out. Just passing the info I’ve discovered. I will be reporting it to PayPal soon. Ordered in October and no product as of January.

    In august of 2014 my wife purchased. Paid in full a JR Belt buckle and was told that it would be shipped to her by October of 2014. The money was taken from paypal yet it is now April 2015 and no buckle. Also the Ewing Oil store is not calling us back, there phone rings and shuts off? And when we contacted PayPal they said we weren’t the first to complain and believe the sale is a scam

I know it took a little bit extra time, but as they say “great things are worth waiting for” I have recieved my merchandise and just recieved an email about my belt buckle being sent. I would trust my last dollar to Ewing Oil. They are great folks, just alot of people are ordering and it may take some time to get it. EWING OIL is #1!

Today is May 27th and my Decanter and Stock certificate has still not arrived from an order I placed back on February 10th. And no email communication. I see where the same decanter I bought in Feb. have been selling on ebay recently from Stephen W. Phillips. Those buyers are getting their merchandise from the feedback I’m reading. I understand that this Phillips is a Dallas fan and I am sure he reads these “Drill Bits”…would be nice if he would reply to me here? The guy has great Dallas collectibles and I would have likely bought more. BTW I have been a Dallas fan since 1980 and own many of the actual screen used props from the show…the decanter sure would look nice beside them. In the beginning I had good communication with Phillips. I had even shared a couple of private photos from the “Green room” at Southfork with the Dallas cast at the 30th Reunion. Like I said a complete mystery in my case?? Anyway congrats Chuck B.
