I just cant understand why no one has picked up Dallas to return to TV. Lifetime, WGN, POP, Netflix, Hulu, SOMEBODY. The millions of fans still begging for our show, what the hell is going on????????,
Miss Green, we just have to get louder and more persistent! While it isn’t my favorite episode, one of my favorite Dallas scenes is when J.R. confronts Dusty, having him go to Texas Stadium and they meet at the 50-yard line of the Cowboys field.
To be honest, I thought about it hard and I cannot really come up with one episode.
Generally I actually believe that Dallas wasn’t meant to have ‘outstanding’ episodes. For an episode being outstanding, writing, directing and performances all need to be outstanding in my opinion.
There were cliffhangers written for obvious reasons. But other than that I think that Katzman and other made sure that all episodes met a certain quality level but never went beyond or beneath it. That ensured that the concept of novelization was never broken. Katzman always made sure that each episode had one or two climax points and that three plotlines were carried over from one episode to the next with only one getting resolved. (Don’t quote me on the exact numbers, but the concept was like that.) That doesn’t mean that the writing was necessarily mediocre. But to me the quality of writing varied a lot only in the dialogues. Sometimes they were terrible, sometimes they were just beautiful.
Directors had very strict parameters they couldn’t break out of either – for the same reason. If they continuously did, they were replaced. So no chance for anything outstanding either. Good: Yes. But never outstanding.
If I had to pick an episode I would name two: I found J.R.s funeral very memorable because some eulogies and performances were outstanding in that episode. The other episode I thought was very memorable was the one where Sue Ellen’s world fell apart when she found Holly and J.R. in bed together. That episode had a really nice built-up and performance. Those are admittedly some very subjective choices. So many other episodes had great moments too.
As always, you make great points, Q-Less. It’s hard to choose singular episodes for “Dallas,” but I do think there are some standouts, including the episodes you cite. Thanks!
U don’t include me in these emails anymore Chris, why?
I haven’t sent any emails recently, R.J.! Dallas Decoder has been pretty quiet lately. Hopefully I can get back to posting regularly again soon.
Why isn’t Holly Harwood mentioned in any of these polls ,? she was eligible for a few ..
