#DallasChat Daily: What’s ‘Dallas’s’ Worst Storyline?

Even great television shows occasionally deliver dud storylines, and “Dallas” is no exception. The groaners include J.R. and Jack’s involvement in the Dimitri Marinos masquerade; the ham-fisted handling of Victoria Principal’s departure from the original series; J.R.’s misadventures in Haleyville, Arkansas; and the eye-rolling revelation that Judith Ryland is a madam.

#DallasChat Daily: What’s ‘Dallas’s’ Best Storyline?

Barbara Bel Geddes, Bobby Ewing, Dallas, J.R. Ewing, Larry Hagman, Linda Gray, Miss Ellie Ewing, Pam Ewing, Patrick Duffy, Sue Ellen Ewing, TNT, Victoria Principal

“Dallas” has delivered a lot of great storytelling over the years, including the story that started it all — Bobby and Pam’s marriage — as well as Miss Ellie’s bout with breast cancer, J.R. and Bobby’s contest for control of Ewing Oil and J.R.’s death. With so much wonderful material to choose from, can you choose a favorite?

#DallasChat Daily: Who’s ‘Dallas’s’ Worst Father?

Amos Krebbs, Cliff Barnes, Dallas, David Wayne, Digger Barnes, Harris Ryland, Ken Kercheval, Mitch Pileggi, TNT, William Windom

“Dallas” has given us so many bad dads over the years, it’s hard to know which one is the worst. But let’s try to choose the franchise’s most feckless father anyway, OK?

Candidates include Digger Barnes, who “sold” Pam to Jock; Jeff Farraday, who sold Christopher to Bobby; Amos Krebbs, who tried to extort money from his in-name-only son Ray; Harris Ryland, who kidnapped Emma and sent her to live with his mother in England; Renaldo Marchetta, who kidnapped Charlie Wade and sent her to live with his parents in Rome; and of course Cliff Barnes, who blew up the Ewing Energies rig, even though his pregnant daughter Pamela was aboard.

#DallasChat Daily: Which Grandson Would Jock Favor?

Jock Ewing played favorites with his sons, choosing Bobby over J.R. How would he feel about the next generation of Ewing boys?

#DallasChat Daily: Who Was Jock’s Favorite Daughter-in-Law?

Dallas, Donna Krebbs, Jim Davis, Joan Van Ark, Jock Ewing, Knots Landing, Linda Gray, Pam Ewing, Sue Ellen Ewing, Susan Howard, Valene Ewing, Victoria Principal

Every “Dallas” fan knows Bobby was Jock’s favorite son, but figuring out which daughter-in-law he favored is a bit tougher.

Jock was no fan of Pam when she arrived at Southfork, but he movingly persuaded her to stay at the ranch when Bobby threatened to take her and leave after her first miscarriage. Jock scolded Sue Ellen when she went missing after J.R.’s shooting, but he also rushed to her defense when Cliff claimed he was John Ross’s father. Jock was friends with Donna before she got together with Ray, but when the couple’s relationship hit a rough patch, he refused to intervene. As for Valene? Yes, Jock helped prevent her from raising Lucy, but the old man also showed up at Gary and Val’s second wedding, hoping to mend fences.

#DallasChat Daily: Was Jock a Good Father?

Bobby Ewing, Dallas, Gary Ewing, JIm Davis, Jock Ewing, J.R. Ewing, Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Ray Krebbs, Steve Kanaly, Ted ShackelfordJock Ewing is “Dallas’s” original grand daddy. He instilled ambition and an unrelenting drive in his eldest son J.R., openly favored youngest son Bobby and struggled to connect with middle son Gary. Toward the end of his life, Jock discovered he was also the biological father of longtime Southfork ranch foreman Ray Krebbs, whom he welcomed into the family fold with open arms, even though it rankled other members of his family.

#DallasChat Daily: What Was J.R. and John Ross’s Best Scene?

Dallas, John Ross Ewing, Josh Henderson, J.R. Ewing, Larry Hagman, TNT

One of the highlights of the new “Dallas’s” first two seasons was Larry Hagman and Josh Henderson’s special chemistry, which the producers showcased in a series of memorable encounters between their characters.

Among these sequences: the “shaving scene,” where J.R. confronted John Ross over his attempted betrayal in the plot to steal Southfork; the time J.R. imparted Jock’s wisdom that “real power is something you take”; the poignant confrontation where John Ross pleaded with J.R. to return ownership of the ranch to the cancer-stricken Bobby; the first-season finale, when an embittered John Ross told his father to teach him “every dirty trick” he knows; the time J.R. schooled John Ross on Ewing unity; and their final phone call, when J.R. told John Ross he was his son “from tip to tail.”

#DallasChat Daily: Does ‘Dallas’ Celebrate Capitalism?

Dallas, John Ross Ewing, Josh Henderson, J.R. Ewing, Larry Hagman, TNT

In some ways, “Dallas” is a show about excess: The Ewings are hard-charging business people who enjoy the trappings of their power and success. On the other hand, the family’s riches might provide them with a nice home, beautiful clothes and fancy cars, but their personal lives are a mess. Also worth noting: “Dallas” routinely depicts the havoc the characters’ pursuit of wealth creates in the world they inhabit. Witness the Ewing Oil tanker disaster on the original series, the Ewing Energies rig explosion on TNT’s “Dallas” and the debate over drilling on Southfork, which has been raging for decades, with no end in sight.

#DallasChat Daily: How Does ‘Dallas’ Depict Working Women?

Donna Culver Krebbs, Elena Ramos, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, Linda Gray, Pam Ewing, Pamela Rebecca Barnes Ewing, Sue Ellen Ewing, Susan Howard, TNT, Victoria Principal

None of “Dallas’s” women characters worked outside their homes when the original show began in 1978, but that gradually changed: Pam got a job at The Store and later entered the oil industry, Lucy modeled and waitressed, Donna became a politico, and Sue Ellen dabbled in fund-raising, lingerie and filmmaking. On TNT’s sequel series, Pamela is co-owner of Ewing Global and Elena works at the company, while Judith calls the shots at Ryland Transport and the brothel.

Your #DallasChat Daily question: How would you describe “Dallas’s” depiction of working women? Have things improved, worsened or stayed the same?
