In “Guilt and Innocence,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, Ann (Brenda Strong) enters the Southfork den, where Bobby (Patrick Duffy) sits on the sofa, reading an investigative report.

ANN: Bobby? Who was at the door?

BOBBY: It’s a messenger.

ANN: Everything OK?

BOBBY: Yeah, it’s uh –

ANN: No, you don’t have to tell me Bobby. [Begins to leave]

BOBBY: No, Annie, Annie. It’s all right. [Motions] Come in. [She sits on the sofa.] It’s about Pam, Christopher’s mother.

ANN: [Concerned] You’ve been looking for her?

BOBBY: No, J.R. was, to help us with Cliff. She’s one-third owner of Barnes Global.

ANN: Where is she?

BOBBY: Uh. [Reads from report, Ann moves closer, puts on her glasses] “1989, with an unnamed man, presumably her husband, entered Abu Dhabi. Passports expired. No record of future travel.” Andy Ellis from the U.S. attorney’s office can help me with this. He owes me one after everything that happened with Vicente Cano.

ANN: I thought you were done with her, Bobby.

BOBBY: [Pensive] So did I, Annie. So did I.

In “Ewings Unite!,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) is seated at her office desk when Valene (Joan Van Ark) storms in and slams the door behind her. 

VAL: Once a bitch, always a bitch!

SUE ELLEN: Yes, it has been a long time. It’s good to see you too.

VAL: You just called me to Dallas to humiliate me. You are just as sadistic as J.R. ever was.

SUE ELLEN: I called to see if I could get you and Gary back together again.

VAL: Oh, please! [Steps forward] Gary is buying your wounded bird drunk routine. And he’s a good enough man to try to save you. But I know that you’re just trying to get your hooks into him.

SUE ELLEN: I don’t want your husband.

VAL: [Rests her palms on the desk] He may not come back to me. But I can promise you: I am not leaving Southfork until I show him what a manipulative monster you are. [Stomps away]

Requiem for a heavyweight

In “J.R.’s Masterpiece,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) stands at J.R.’s gravesite and addresses the mourners.

SUE ELLEN: When I was Miss Texas, and I met J.R., I didn’t know what hit me. I fell in love. Madly, passionately, hopelessly in love with the most infuriating, charming scoundrel I think I’ve ever known. It’s enough to drive a girl to drink. I spent the night in J.R.’s room last night. I needed the courage to read a letter that he had sent before he died. I was terrified about what the letter might say. So I told myself that I would have a drink. Just one, to help me get through. So I had that one drink. And then I kept on going. I’m a bit drunk now. And I wanted to share the letter that J.R. wrote. [She pulls the letter from her coat pocket.] “My dearest Sue Ellen: Old age has a way of humbling men. For me to apologize now for all the wrongs I’ve done you would take up all the time I’ve got left. So I’m hoping it will suffice for me to say that I was never worthy of you. That I loved you the moment I saw you. And that I love you today, more than I ever did. It is my greatest hope in life to earn a second chance with you. So what do you say? When I get back to Dallas, will you have dinner with me?” [Folds the letter] Yes, yes J.R. [Sobs] The answer is yes. [Kneels, touches his casket] You were the love of my life.

As she cries, Bobby (Patrick Duffy) escorts her to her seat.

In “The Furious and the Fast,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, John Ross (Josh Henderson) is sitting alone in the Ewing Energies conference room at night when he receives a phone call from J.R. (Larry Hagman).

J.R.: Tell me what you know, John Ross.

JOHN ROSS: Christopher won the damn race. And don’t bother with the lecture because there’s nothing you could tell me that I haven’t already told myself. But there’s a play to be made with the woman at the DCT. We can fix this.

J.R.: Well, I’m glad to hear that. Don’t you worry, son. I’ve got a plan. It’s going to be my masterpiece – because you shouldn’t have to pay for my sins.

JOHN ROSS: What do you mean?

J.R.: Just remember: I’m proud of you. You’re my son, from tip to tail.

JOHN ROSS: Thank you, Daddy. It means a whole lot for me to hear you say that. [He hears two gunshots.] J.R.? Hello? Dad! Dad! [Softly] Dad?

In “Blame Game,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, Bobby and Sue Ellen (Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray) sit together in the Southfork living room, where the Ewings are being held hostage.

SUE ELLEN: Even if Christopher does get here on time, I don’t see this coming to an end without somebody getting hurt. Or worse.

BOBBY: J.R. and John Ross brought this on us, Sue Ellen, by getting mixed up with these guys. Bad begets bad. It always has. It always will.

SUE ELLEN: J.R. does bad, you do good. And repeat. A vicious cycle that our sons seem destined to continue. It’s the Ewing way.

BOBBY: It doesn’t have to be. If we get out of this, you could break the cycle.

SUE ELLEN: By giving Elena her shares back?

BOBBY: It’d be a start.

In “Trial and Error,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, Ann (Brenda Strong) testifies before her attorney Lou (Glenn Morshower) and a packed courtroom.

ANN: I was a tall, awkward girl. Most of my life, I felt ugly. My mother took me to doctors when I hit puberty so they would make me stop growing. No one had really ever paid any attention to me until Harris. My family didn’t have much money. And Harris took me to fancy restaurants, stores, bought me nice clothes. We were happy. He had grown up in a suffocating home. His father had committed suicide before he was born. And his mother controlled his every breath. Harris kept telling me how good I was for him, that I brought life into the dark of his life. Then his mother began to interfere. Nothing I could do was right. She made fun of the fact that I had never gone to college. She put ideas in his head about me, that I was a gold-digger, that I was seeing other men. And he believed her. So he began trying to control me the way he had always been controlled. If I picked the wrong blouse, picked up the wrong fork, did my hair a certain way, he’d shout at me. I began to realize that the marriage had been a mistake. When I found out I was pregnant, I felt trapped. By the time Emma was born, I felt like I was drowning. I was diagnosed with post-partum depression and put on medication. I had a difficult time being a young mother. I’m sorry. But I did not leave my daughter at home alone! I left Emma with Judith so I could go see a divorce lawyer. But Judith lied to Harris for her own twisted purposes. And then Harris found out about my plans to divorce him, and he forced me to see a psychiatrist to put me on more medication.

LOU: Tell us what happened at the state fair.

ANN: Emma was 18 months old. Harris and his mother were particularly cruel to me the night before, so that morning, I took a few more pills than I should’ve. I couldn’t think straight, but I couldn’t stand to be in that house another minute, so I took Emma to the fair. It was so very hot. I remember being so thirsty, so I left her in her stroller and went to get a soda. Only a couple minutes passed. I turned back, and she was gone. I had stepped away from my baby for only a few moments and she’d been kidnapped. God had punished me by taking my baby.

In “False Confessions,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, J.R. (Larry Hagman) is standing at his bedroom window, ending a phone call, when John Ross (Josh Henderson) enters.

JOHN ROSS: What’s going on?

J.R.: Bobby got arrested for shooting Harris Ryland.

JOHN ROSS: You serious? [Steps forward] You think that will help us get him out of Ewing Energies?

J.R.: You still got a lot to learn, boy. [Slides his cell phone in his pocket] When the family’s in trouble, we don’t take advantage.

JOHN ROSS: You got a problem with me?

J.R.: You damn right I do. [Steps forward] I hear you’ve been cavorting with Pamela Barnes. What do fathers say? I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed? Well, I am both.

JOHN ROSS: Who I cavort with ain’t none of your business.

J.R.: It is when her last name is Barnes. [Sits] What do you want with Christopher’s scraps anyway?

JOHN ROSS: I’m working her.

J.R.: And apparently not learning from your mistakes. You already got in bed with one crazy woman in that Marta. Not a good idea to get in bed with another one.

JOHN ROSS: I’ve got a plan to get her shares of Ewing Energies after the divorce.

J.R.: You let that Barnes girl get a piece of our company and you’re inviting a vampire into our home. She’ll suck the life out of us. That’s why I’ve seen to it that there won’t be a divorce.

JOHN ROSS: How’s that?

J.R.: I made a deal with Cliff’s man Frank. We’ve got a plan to take Pamela out of the picture.

JOHN ROSS: You must be getting senile in your old age, Daddy, because I’m the one calling the shots here. Remember?

J.R.: You asked me to teach you every dirty trick I know so we can take Ewing Energies. I teach by example.

JOHN ROSS: What do you and Frank plan on doing to Pamela?

J.R.: You got feelings for this girl?

JOHN ROSS: No.

J.R.: Then why do you care?

Night visitor

In “Sins of the Father,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, Frank (Faran Tahir) enters his darkened home and finds J.R. (Larry Hagman) seated there.

J.R.: You lost a step, Frank. It’s a sad day when an old man can sneak up on a super ninja.

FRANK: What are you doing here?

J.R.: Well, I heard they found some – what do you call it? – high velocity blood splatter at Pamela Barnes’s old condo. Word is it might belong to Tommy Sutter.

FRANK: I’m no detective, but whatever they found in Pamela’s condo is Pamela’s problem.

J.R.: Well, I’m no detective either, but it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to know you clean up whatever mess Cliff asks you to. And this certainly is a mess.

FRANK: It may be hard for an old, retired fellow like you to understand this, but I’m a busy man. I don’t have time to chat.

J.R.: Well, I’m retired, but not by choice. Getting pushed out of my place at the table stung like hell. But you know how that feels, don’t you Frank? After all the jams you’ve gotten Cliff out of, to be treated like a lapdog by that spoiled princess? You’re not a Barnes, Frank. No matter how much Cliff appreciates what you’ve done, when push comes to shove, he’s going to protect his daughter. Now we both know that rich folks don’t go to jail. However, the people that clean up after them do.

FRANK: What are you suggesting?

J.R.: Tell me where the body and the gun are. I’ll make sure they pop up. You can get your place back at the Barnes Global table, and I make sure that Barnes girl doesn’t get a piece of Ewing Energies. [Smiles]

FRANK: If there were a body, the moment it appeared, Cliff would know I sold him out.

J.R.: [Chuckles] Frank, I’m J.R. Ewing. I can make a body appear in the middle of a church social without anybody knowing how it got there.

FRANK: Why should I trust you?

J.R.: Because we both want to destroy Pamela. And it’s a rare and beautiful thing when enemies share the same enemy. [Rises] I’ll be expecting your call. [Walks past him] Make it soon.

In “Venomous Creatures,” a second-season “Dallas” episode, J.R. (Larry Hagman) visits Pamela (Julie Gonzalo) in the Barnes Global boardroom.

PAMELA: What are you doing here, J.R.?

J.R.: I’m just here to look my enemy in the eye. And since your daddy is about 2 feet shorter than I am, I guess you’ll have to do.

PAMELA: I must have done something right to deserve a visit from you.

J.R.: Congratulations on your win in court. Now divorce court, if you want some tips, I can offer you a few. I’m an expert authority.

PAMELA: I already have my experts.

J.R.: Oh, and if you’ve got it in your pretty little head to go after Ewing Energies in the divorce, you won’t be dealing with Christopher. You’ll be dealing with me.

PAMELA: You’re not a part of that company.

J.R.: No, no. But I’m part of that family. You’re not the first Pam to fox her way into the henhouse. I’m 1 for 1 on flushing out Pamelas. And I plan on being 2 for 2.

In “Battle Lines,” “Dallas’s” second-season opener, Frank (Faran Tahir) escorts Bobby and Christopher (Patrick Duffy, Jesse Metcalfe) into the Barnes Global boardroom, where Pamela (Julie Gonzalo) awaits them.

CHRISTOPHER: What the hell’s going on, Rebecca?

PAMELA: I should probably introduce myself. My middle name is Rebecca. When I was a little girl, that’s what my mother called me. But my father, he likes to call me by my first name. By my aunt’s name: Pamela. My full name is Pamela Rebecca Barnes. Cliff Barnes is my father.

CHRISTOPHER: He’s your what?

PAMELA: [To Bobby] I’m Afton’s daughter. I changed my name to Rebecca Sutter because of my father.

BOBBY: Because your crazy father is stuck in a feud that should have ended decades ago.

PAMELA: Because I knew the burden my name would be with your family. Like it was with you and my aunt. I fell in love with you, Christopher. The truth is, I would have done anything for you. But sadly, I think we’re past any declarations of love we may have once had for each other. So let’s just get to the point. I have no interest in money. My father can buy and sell you many times over. What I want is for my children to have a father in their lives. I never did growing up. And I’m afraid that’s made me do a great many stupid things in life.

CHRISTOPHER: Like conning me. And lying to me. Listen, I told you, you’re never going to see those babies. I promise you.

PAMELA: I’d like to make you an offer. I keep primary custody of the children, but you can see them every day.

BOBBY: You screw over my son, and then you want to make an offer? You certainly are your father’s daughter.

PAMELA: My father thinks – and I agree with him – that since we were married when you created Ewing Energies that I should get a part of it. I would like 30 percent of your ownership. You must know that if we go to divorce court –

CHRISTOPHER: Our marriage was a fraud and it will be annulled. And an annulment will get you no part of my family’s company. The fact that you kept from me that you’re Cliff Barnes’s daughter proves that our marriage was a sham from the start.

PAMELA: If you don’t take my deal now, I will go to court and fight you with the full weight of my father’s power. And I think you know that destroying the Ewings means everything to him.

CHRISTOPHER: You’re out of your mind. And you’d better come at me with everything you’ve got. Because I’m going to take you down.
