In “Revelations,” “Dallas’s” first-season finale, J.R. (Larry Hagman) enters Bobby’s hospital room, where a nurse (Gail Washington) stands nearby as Bobby (Patrick Duffy) lies in a coma-like state.

NURSE: Sir, you can’t be in here yet.

J.R.: Well, you can call security if you have to darlin’. But until they throw me out, I’m going to be talking to my brother. [The nurse leaves and J.R. approaches Bobby’s bed and takes his hand.] Come on. Wake up, you hear me? Wake up and you get better. You keep fighting. You keep fighting me. [Pauses] Now I’m going to tell you something you never heard me say before. I love you, Bobby, and I don’t know who I’d be without you.

In “Family Business,” a first-season “Dallas” episode, J.R. (Larry Hagman) visits Bobby (Patrick Duffy), who sits in his bed.

J.R.: You could have told me about the cancer.

BOBBY: Slipped my mind. I guess I was too busy trying to undo all the damage you caused.

J.R.: OK, I admit, I have lapses where I do wrong now and then.

BOBBY: No, J.R., your lapses aren’t when you do wrong. Your lapses are when you do right. Like the scorpion who said to the frog, “It’s just in my nature.”

J.R.: Well, you happy with your doctor? Because I’ve given a truckload of money to the UT medical school.

BOBBY: J.R., I love you. No matter what. You remember that.

J.R.: Well, my memory’s not what it used to be, either. You’re just going to have to keep telling me.

BOBBY: Nobody lives forever.

J.R.: Well, I’m not going to stand here and listen to you write your obituary. If you have something to say to me, you say it when they get that thing fixed in your head.

BOBBY: I spent the last 20 years trying to protect this land. Protect your legacy. I remember you once told me that family is like baking a cake from scratch. Real messy. I wish I could tell you things are different, Mama, but they’re not. Our family is as fractured and dysfunctional as always. And I keep trying to think what you’d do if you were here. But I know: You’d do whatever it takes to protect the family. And that’s just what I’m gonna do, Mama.

Mama knows best

In “Collateral Damage,” a first-season “Dallas” episode, Elena and Sue Ellen (Jordana Brewster, Linda Gray) discuss John Ross’s business problems while having lunch in a posh restaurant.

ELENA: Why doesn’t he just ask me himself?

SUE ELLEN: Because he’s a man. And worse, he’s a Ewing man. And the Ewings always have to believe that they have everything under control. But the bigger truth is John Ross is a good boy – and he has a good heart. And he doesn’t want you to feel that he’s taking advantage. But his father’s investors are very impatient – and very unreasonable. And the barrels you would be giving him would only help to tide them over until John Ross can get his operation fully going.

ELENA: John Ross knows I want no part of drilling on Southfork. He respects that. It’s what he wants.

SUE ELLEN: You wouldn’t be drilling Southfork. You would be helping John Ross keep his head above water. His father just dumped this into his lap, warts and all. And John Ross is just trying to make the best of it. I want my son to succeed.

ELENA: And so do I. You’re not the only one that cares about John Ross. But I also care about Christopher and Bobby. Don’t you?

SUE ELLEN: Elena, when the day comes that you have to choose between your child and anybody else, I hope you choose wisely. [A waiter places the bill on the table.] And as the sole investor in your growing enterprise [signs the bill], I hope you always make the wise choice.

She rises and leaves.

Necessity is a mother

In “The Enemy of My Enemy,” a first-season “Dallas” episode, John Ross (Josh Henderson) visits Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) at her office.

SUE ELLEN: Hello, darling. What a nice surprise. [Kisses him]

JOHN ROSS: Mother.

SUE ELLEN: Don’t tell me. You’re here to take me out to lunch, hmm?

JOHN ROSS: I’m afraid not. [Turns away] I came because I need your help.

SUE ELLEN: Well, whatever you need. You know that.

JOHN ROSS: Harris Ryland of Ryland Transport. Is he a friend of yours? [Turns to face her]

SUE ELLEN: I wouldn’t say he’s exactly a friend. I know him a little socially.

JOHN ROSS: Socially is enough. He’s pulled his tanker trucks from Southfork and I can’t pump oil without something to transport it in. Now, I need you to convince him to send his trucks back.

SUE ELLEN: What are you asking me to do, exactly?

JOHN ROSS: You’re running for governor. I need you to play politics. Promise Ryland something. Whatever you want. I don’t care. I just need those trucks back so I can get pumping.

She looks away.

JOHN ROSS: I should’ve known.

SUE ELLEN: [Faces him] No, John Ross, I want to. I need you to believe that. But I made a promise when I got into this race to my backers and my supporters.

JOHN ROSS: Screw your promises! You’ve been compromising everything with me since I was born.

SUE ELLEN: John Ross, if I start down that road. [Pauses]

JOHN ROSS: J.R.’s investors hold a note to the ranch. We’re paying them back with 14 percent of the oil. If we don’t pay them on time, they could take the ranch. And I got a feeling they’re going to do a lot worse than that.

SUE ELLEN: My God. [Touches his face] Who have you gotten yourself into business with?

JOHN ROSS: [Walks away] Save it, mother.

SUE ELLEN: Wait. [He turns to face her.] I can help you in other ways, John Ross.

JOHN ROSS: There’s a simple solution you can do, now. And you turn me down. Some things never change.

He leaves.

The road back

In “Truth and Consequences,” a first-season “Dallas” episode, Bobby and Ann (Patrick Duffy, Brenda Strong) confront J.R. (Larry Hagman) over the deed that lists him as Southfork’s owner.

J.R.: You know, I always felt a little funny about that Marta del Sol girl, ever since I saw her at the Cattle Baron’s Ball. Daddy always said beautiful women were the most dangerous.

BOBBY: I know all the things Daddy used to say.

J.R.: Well, a couple weeks ago, I heard she was planning on selling Southfork to Cliff Barnes. I was surprised she could put it right back on the market after buying it from you, but hell, I figured that was just the deal you and Lobell made with her.

ANN: That wasn’t the deal, J.R., and you know it.

J.R.: Bobby kept me out of the deal, so no, I don’t know it, darlin’. When I heard that vulture Barnes was trying to steal Southfork and get his hands on the ranch and all the oil my boy found under it, I got a group of investors together and swooped in and bought it from del Sol. Well, I don’t think Cliff Barnes knew what hit him. And I guess, maybe neither did you. [Grabs his hat off a table, holds it] Now that she’s mine, I’m going to start sinking more wells as soon as I can. Ewing Oil is back in business, Bobby.

BOBBY: [Steps closer] That’s not going to happen, J.R. [Holds up the deed] This is not going to happen. That’s why I wanted to sell Southfork in the first place, to stop all this feuding, and leave a legacy to Mama.

J.R.: You wanna carry on Mama’s legacy? Well, I wanna carry on Daddy’s. I’m taking back what should have been mine in the first place.

BOBBY: That’s how you justify this? How twisted can you get?

J.R.: Now, why don’t you settle down and accept what’s what? The deed is real, and this place is mine, but you can stay here as long as you like, Bobby. We’re family.

BOBBY: I’m going to make this right. And then I’m going to take you down, brother.

Ann begins to follow Bobby out of the room.

J.R.: [To Ann] Always did get a little hot under the collar when he didn’t get his way. But he’ll come around, you’ll see.

ANN: [Turning to face him] They warned me. My whole marriage, they told me about you. But in my wildest imagination, I never thought you could stoop to this.

J.R.: Well, Annie, you’re just going to have to work on your imagination.

In “The Last Hurrah,” a first-season “Dallas” episode, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) is behind her desk when J.R. (Larry Hagman) knocks at the door.

SUE ELLEN: J.R.?

J.R.: I just wanted to drop off a little good luck charm, for your campaign. I found Miss Ellie’s pearls when I was packing up Southfork.

He hands her a box as Cliff [Ken Kercheval] enters.

CLIFF: Well, what do we have here? An angel talking to the devil.

J.R.: What’s he doing here?

SUE ELLEN: Well, not that it’s any of your business, J.R., but I heard he was in town and I figured I needed a little political advice.

CLIFF: And I was happy to oblige.

J.R.: Sure was an unpleasant surprise to see you at Southfork last week. You must have been out of your tiny mind to think that Bobby would ever sell the ranch to you.

CLIFF: I will never stop fighting for what is rightfully mine – and I know you are the same way.

J.R.: I’m a changed man, Cliff. Evidence of that is the fact that you’re not being wheeled out of here with two broken legs. Now that Bobby’s sold Southfork, you can go ahead and leave town. Nothing left for you to do in Dallas.

CLIFF: Well, when you have several billion dollars, J.R., you can do whatever you want to, wherever you want. [To Sue Ellen] Shall we?

J.R.: Are you really going to break bread with this lowlife?

SUE ELLEN: You lost your right to have a say with whom I lunch a long time ago.

It’s a cutthroat business, son

In “The Price You Pay,” a first-season “Dallas” episode, J.R. and John Ross (Larry Hagman, Josh Henderson) are each seated in barber chairs getting shaved. A towel covers John Ross’s eyes.

J.R.: Feels good, doesn’t it?

JOHN ROSS: Almost sinful.

J.R.: [Chuckles] Your granddaddy Jock took me here the day I closed my first big deal. That man taught me everything I know about business. [Rises from the chair, tips the barber, tells him to “get going,” walks toward John Ross] When I was 8 years old, I asked my daddy for a horse, and he says when I came up for the money, he’d sell me one. [Snaps at John Ross’s barber, who gives him his razor, takes J.R.’s money and leaves] So, all that summer, I worked in the oil fields, digging trenches and such, 12 hours a day. [Begins shaving John Ross] And true to his word, daddy sold me a horse. Now, I learned quick enough, that horse was blind. Now, I loved my daddy, and I respected my daddy, but most importantly, I feared my daddy. [J.R. pulls away the towel covering John Ross’s eyes; John Ross sees J.R. is now holding the straight blade to his neck] I went down to Mexico and talked to Mr. del Sol about the Southfork deal. I know Marta is not Marta. Were you going to cut your daddy out of 2 billion barrels worth of oil? Hmm?

SUE ELLEN: J.R., what are you doing here? I thought you weren’t well enough to even leave your room.

J.R.: I just came by to congratulate you. And you deserve it, honey. Look at you. And look at me. You won, honey. And I couldn’t be happier. [Turns to walk away]

SUE ELLEN: Wait.

J.R.: If you ask me, you’d make a hell of a governor. And if I do say so, you are still the prettiest girl at the ball.

Brother, where art thou?

In “Changing of the Guard,” “Dallas’s” first episode, Bobby (Patrick Duffy) visits the nursing home, where he sits at the side of the motionless J.R. (Larry Hagman).

BOBBY: All those fights, J.R., over Ewing Oil and Southfork. Those fights changed me. Changed me in a way I don’t like. I worry about Christopher and John Ross. I want them to have a chance to be a family. Without all the bitterness and bad blood you and I had. I don’t want them to be like us. But, all that being said, I do miss you. [Winces, grabs his stomach] Well, I hope you know. I always loved you. [He rises, kisses J.R. on the head and leaves.]
